Brief History Of Clan Carthy Primary School
Clan Carthy Primary School is a government funded and operated primary educational institution located at 5 Deanery Road, Kingston 16. Its humble genesis in the 1960’s, is credited to an overcrowding problem at Franklyn Town Primary and thus initially established as an extension to Franklyn Town Primary. The school was erected on lands donated by the McCarthy family who originated from Scotland.
In the decade of the sixties, there was a grave shortage of school spaces for children age six (6) to twelve (12) years. The then Minister of Education made an appeal to persons and organizations with available buildings and lands to make them available. It was to this call that the McCarthy family responded making lands available to the government in order to relieve the overcrowding situation at Franklyn Town Primary.
In 1970, a building donated by the Canadian Government was opened and it was then that the school ceased being an extension of Franklyn Town Primary and became known as the Clan Carthy Primary. “Clan” is the Scottish word for family, hence the name, “Clan Carthy”.
In 1971, two (2) two storey buildings were completed to enable the school to accommodate over one thousand (1000) students. The aim of Clan Carthy Primary is to make each child literate and numerate as well as to cater for their physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs.
Our motto is, “Be the best of whatever you are”.
Our School’s Mission statement reads, “The Mission of Clan Carthy Primary, in accordance with the Ministry of Education, is to give the children a rounded education to make them literate and numerate and cater to their social, emotional, physical and spiritual development.”
Currently, our school caters to approximately nine hundred and fifty (950) students with an academic staff compliment of thirty-one (31).
